Join the Leverhulme Trust-funded Seeing the Unseen project and help answer fundamental questions about how atmospheric gravity waves influence the Earth's atmosphere, weather and climate, and may provide early warning of dangerous tropical cyclone intensification.

You will work within an international team combining satellite observations, ground-based measurements and state-of-the-art numerical models to overcome the long-standing "observational filter problem". Our goal is to produce the first physically-consistent picture of the global atmospheric gravity wave field and the momentum it transports, and you will play a central role in achieving this.

About you

We are looking for someone who:

  • Is enthusiastic about understanding how the atmosphere works and tackling challenging scientific problems.
  • Has, or is close to completing, a PhD in atmospheric science, physics, meteorology, mathematics or a related discipline.
  • Has experience analysing scientific data and writing research software.
  • Enjoys working collaboratively and communicating science to a range of audiences.
  • Is motivated to publish high-quality research and develop an international research profile.
  • Investigate how atmospheric gravity waves are generated, propagate through the atmosphere, and influence large-scale atmospheric circulation.
  • Analyse observations from NASA and ESA satellites alongside ground-based measurements and high-resolution atmospheric simulations to address fundamental scientific questions.
  • Apply high-resolution atmospheric simulations to interpret observations, test new measurement techniques, and investigate gravity wave processes.
  • Collaborate with leading UK and international researchers, publish in high-impact journals, present at international conferences, and contribute to open-source scientific software and datasets.

    The project spans a broad range of techniques, and we are keen to build on the successful candidate's strengths. We would particularly welcome applicants with experience in areas such as satellite retrievals and remote sensing (to improve our understanding of instrument measurements), high-resolution atmospheric modelling (to investigate gravity wave processes and simulate case studies), or atmospheric dynamics and wave theory (to help interpret the resulting observations), but we also welcome applicants from complementary backgrounds who can demonstrate how their expertise would help achieve the project's scientific goals. You will be joining a larger interdisciplinary team with expertise across these areas, so we are interested in how your skills and ideas can complement the existing team while helping to shape the future direction of the research.

In addition, the post holder will provide expert technical support to staff and students across the department and faculty with the specification, design and manufacture of bespoke mechanical systems, and the repair, maintenance and modification of new and existing experimental rigs and components. The Technical Specialist will bring expert mechanical systems knowledge to inform and influence effective design and manufacture of new rigs, and the adaptation of existing rigs. They will also have custodianship of laboratories and workshops containing specialist research equipment and contribute to the management of health and safety in these spaces. 

About you

<![CDATA[Research Associate in Atmospheric Dynamics for High-Altitude Autonomous Platforms (SS13809)]]> /jobs/rss/click.aspx?ref=SS13809 /jobs/rss/click.aspx?ref=SS13809 Applications are invited for an exciting and dynamic Postdoctoral Research Associate position in Atmospheric Dynamics for High-Altitude Autonomous Platforms, working with Dr Neil Hindley at the ºÚÁϳԹÏÍø’s Centre for Climate, Adaptation and Environment Research (CAER).

The successful candidate will work on STRAT-NAV, a £2m research project exploring how atmospheric gravity waves can be predicted, navigated and exploited to extend the flight times of high-altitude platform systems (HAPS) operating in the stratosphere.

About the project

High-altitude platform systems (HAPS) are autonomous aircraft designed to operate in the stratosphere, above commercial aviation, where they can provide long-endurance communications, sensing and monitoring capabilities. However, many current HAPS aircraft face serious power limitations at UK latitudes during winter, when solar power is at a minimum.

Our project, STRAT-NAV, will explore the opportunity to overcome these limitations by using atmospheric gravity waves as a source of lift. Just as gliders soar on waves in the lower atmosphere, stratospheric HAPS can reduce their power consumption by navigating through gravity wave updrafts, avoiding downdrafts and regions of turbulence.

Our project will combine km-scale meteorological modelling, atmospheric wave dynamics, optimal routing methods and field observations to enable HAPS platforms to predict, navigate to and soar on gravity waves, especially during winter when stratospheric gravity waves are strongest over the UK.

Delivery of STRAT-NAV will involve closely collaboration with our project partners including , , and .

This role forms part of the research programme, funded by the UK's . Backed by £50m, this programme explores the opportunity space for high-altitude autonomous atmospheric platforms operating in the stratosphere as part of an effective and economical UK communications network.

About the role

The successful candidate will use high-resolution dynamical atmospheric modelling and mathematical routing algorithms to investigate how HAPS aircraft can navigate through atmospheric gravity-wave fields. 

In Year 1, the candidate will determine the maximum HAPS energy saving opportunity from gravity wave soaring, using km-scale stratospheric modelling and idealised routing algorithms. They will then take part in a UK field campaign, scheduled for winter 2026/27, where we will use intensive radiosonde balloon observations to validate the waves in these meteorological model forecasts and thereby evaluate the viability of this gravity wave assisted HAPS routing technology.

In Year 2, the candidate will apply their gravity-wave forecasting and routing capability to real HAPS test flights in the field, working with and other HAPS developers as part of the wider ARIA programme.

In Year 3, the candidate will refine the forecasting and routing capability across multiple HAPS platforms and assess its operational and commercial viability

About You

We are looking for a strongly self-motivated, independent and innovative researcher who enjoys solving new problems. You will be comfortable working in a small team, collaborating closely with external partners, and contributing to a fast-moving applied research programme.

This role would particularly suit someone who enjoys both technical computing and practical fieldwork. The successful candidate will be expected to contribute to intensive observational campaigns, sometimes working to tight schedules in field conditions, as well as developing and analysing numerical models and routing methods.

You will have a PhD, or equivalent experience, in Physics, Mathematics, Meteorology, Aerospace Engineering or a related discipline.

You should also have strong programming and computational skills, including ideally Python and/or MATLAB, some familiarity with Bash and UNIX-based systems and handling large datasets.

We are especially interested in candidates with one or more of the following:

  • experience in high-resolution atmospheric modelling;
  • experience with atmospheric dynamics, gravity waves, weather forecasting or numerical weather prediction;
  • experience with UAV, aircraft or vehicle routing algorithms;
  • a strong mathematical background that could be applied to optimal routing, trajectory planning or dynamical systems;
  • experience working with observational atmospheric datasets;
  • enthusiasm for fieldwork and applied, interdisciplinary research.

You do not need to have worked on HAPS before. We welcome applications from candidates with relevant backgrounds in atmospheric science, applied mathematics, physics, engineering, aerospace systems or adjacent computational fields.

This is a full-time position for 12 months in the first instance, with possible extension to 24 months and then to 36 months, depending on the evolving development of the wider programme and project funding.

The Department of Electronic and Electrical Engineering at the ºÚÁϳԹÏÍø is seeking to appoint a Lecturer or Senior Lecturer with a strong alignment to robotics engineering and preferably artificial intelligence to undertake excellent research and deliver high-quality teaching. We are looking for outstanding researchers to enhance our research, join an expanding and ambitious department, and to shape the technology of the future in a vibrant and inclusive environment and to engage with plans to grow teaching in these areas with strategic partnerships. 

The post will strengthen robotics as a cross-cutting research theme within Electronic and Electrical Engineering, linking sensing, embedded systems, control, and AI-enabled engineering. The successful applicant will be well placed to collaborate across the Faculty’s research centres and institutes, particularly The Foundry, the Centre for Bioengineering & Biomedical Technologies, the Centre for Sustainable Energy Systems and IAAPS. Areas of particular interest include autonomous and assistive robotics, human-machine interaction, AI-enabled perception and control, and resilient robotic systems for health, industrial, energy and manufacturing applications.

The successful applicant will build a research portfolio with potential for national and international impact. They will help the department equip our students with the ability to make outstanding contributions in the world around them, by fostering advanced knowledge and practical skills, and they will support and develop courses that are intellectually bold and academically stimulating.

About you

We are interested in applicants with core expertise in robotics, and an interest in electromechanical systems in general and ideally the application of artificial intelligence (AI). 

You will be expected to contribute to our undergraduate programmes in Electrical and Electronic Engineering and postgraduate programmes including our MSc in Artificial Intelligence for Engineering and Design, teaching in areas such as: 

  • Robotics and mechatronics
  • Human Machine Interaction
  • Robotics in healthcare and well-being
  • Applications of AI and data science in engineering

The successful applicant will have a track record in fundamental and applied robotics research, ideally also in artificial intelligence, with the potential to develop a research portfolio, and a key interest in educating the next generation of engineers.

You will hold a PhD and an undergraduate degree in Electronic and Electrical Engineering or a very closely related subject. Through your research and teaching, you will be passionate about addressing the global challenges and educating the next generation of electronic and electrical engineers. This role will suit you if you:
